Over 60 Anti-Nuclear Protestors braved the winter weather to attend this event. After crossing the bridge and walking
up the road for a piece they started gathering along the road near the entrance to the
Los Alamos National (nuclear weapons) Laboratory.KEY FACTS
The proposed CMRR Nuclear Facility is three times the size of a Walmart SuperCenter.
It would be capable of manufacturing 125 plutonium triggers for nuclear weapons annually.
It is located in a seismic zone. For Fiscal Year 2011 (beginning on October 1, 2010), the Obama Administration is asking for $225 million for the CMRR. Much of this funding would be used for design so that the Nuclear Facility could withstand an earthquake.
In 2003, the estimated cost for the entire Project was $600 million. Now the estimate is $4.5 billion – a seven-fold increase in seven years.
Since 2007, LANL has been manufacturing less than 10 plutonium triggers per year at existing facilities. CCNS and others have been asking for a “capacity study” to determine whether the Nuclear Facility is even needed.
